Flame Spread & Smoke Developed Values Fire Retardant Coatings of Texas® FX Lumber Guard & FX Lumber Guard XT have been tested for fire performance by independent laboratories and meets model code requirements for a Class A/Class 1 fire retardant. As a result of tunnel testing (UL 723, ASTM E 84, and NFPA 255 are essentially identical) surface burning characteristic classification has been assigned to all of Fire Retardant Coatings of Texas Fire Retardant Products.
During this test, smoke emissions are also measured and ratings are assigned on the same scale. These flame spread and smoke development ratings are established during the first 10 minutes. However, building codes require that the test be extended from 10 minutes to 30 minutes and the flame spread not progress more than 10 1/2 feet beyond the burners and show no evidence of progressive combustion. FX Lumber Guard & FX Lumber Guard XT meet these requirements. Fire Retardant Coatings of Texas’ FX Lumber Guard has a flame spread index of 25 or less when tested in the E 84 tunnel test and shows no evidence of progressive combustion in 30 minutes. Fire Retardant Coatings of Texas treatment reduces the flame spread of most species to less than 25 which is essentially the same as gypsum wallboard. Test Fire Retardant Coatings of Texas Fire Retardant Products have been tested in accordance with the following procedures: • ASTM E84 Extended • ASTM D2898 • NFPA 703 • NFPA 286 • NFPA 255 • UL 723 • UBC 42.1 Fire Resistance Hourly Ratings Descriptions of fire resistance rated assemblies incorporating structural lumber are listed in several publications, with the following being those generally referenced in model building codes:
